If you have school-aged children, chances are you have problem heard of Hexbugs and you might even have some crawling around your house. If this is new to you, trust me; they really aren’t gross at all. They are fun little “bugs” that zip around and can be downright entertaining.
Nathan, who is 8, discovered Hexbug Nanos about a year ago and he has spent hours setting up mazes for his bugs to roam around, creations for them to race around, and all sorts of other fun things. His collection of bugs has grown and he now has a good half dozen or so.

We were sent the Hexbug Nano Spiral Starter Set to review and Nathan was so excited! The Hexbug Nano Spiral Starter set contains one “extremely rare mutation” (ie Hexbug Nano), two easy connect HEX cells, 5 easy connect spiral ramp pieces, 2 easy connect one way gates, and 16 easy connect standoffs. The set has two levels for bugs to explore.
Nathan put this together with Dad’s help. He probably could have done it on his own, but he was in a hurry to get his bugs on there exploring so he asked for help in snapping the ramp pieces together.

In no time at all, he was placing his Nano bugs on the spiral starter set. All 6 of us watched as the bug buzzed around the top level in typical Nano-fashion and then it suddenly found the ramp opening. The bug raced down the spiral ramp and then zoomed around the lower level. After a few passes, it found the ramp opening again and began to head up. I had wondered if the bugs could really climb upwards, but they sure did! A couple of Nathan’s bugs were a little slower at it (they probably needed new cell batteries) but most of them raced up.
The Hexbug Nano Spiral Starter Set retails for $24.99 and provides hours of fun. Whether it’s blocking off a ramp so bugs can go down, but not up or watching the bugs fight each other for a place on the ramp, there’s so many things to do with this.

We were also sent the Limited Edition Hexbug Nano Holiday Ornament. This cute little Hexbug Nano is outfitted with removable reindeer antlers and packaged in a festive clear ornament.

The plastic ornament has a “rare snowflake” design, making it a great collector’s item for both kids and adults. Each ornament contains a unique code that allows kids to keep track of their collection online, along with learning fun facts about scientists and more game play ideas and tips.
If your kids have been begging you for a pet that is simply not going to happen, a Hexbug Nano (or two, or three!) might be the perfect solution. These little bugs really do appear to be alive and are so much fun.
The Hexbug collection is a great gift idea for kids. Whether it’s a simple stocking stuffer or a set, like the Hexbug Nano Spiral Starter, what a fun present! Nathan has put Hexbugs at the #1 spot on his Christmas wish list – that says a lot right there!
